XYZ--XYZ (1989/Enigma)
Rating--7.0
Inside Out--RealAudio
One of the glam-era holy grail discs, as they're a bit hard to come by--plus, there are also a good number of crunching riffs,
which doesn't hurt...
As you probably know, some of the best glam metal in the world could have been released around
1990, but would have gone unnoticed due to the changing music (and MTV) scene. Such was the case of XYZ. No, they weren't
the best, but they deserved more exposure than they got.
Produced by Don Dokken, the band reminds
at times of his band. A little like Leatherwolf as well, though not nearly as intricate or swift.
The killer intro
riff of "Inside Out" still gets airplay on those late-night, weekend metal shows around the country. "Take What You Can" is another
heavy-edged, riff-based cut, and has shades of Badlands throughout.
The slow-stewing,
evil blues of "Follow the Night" grinds, as does "Come On N' Love Me".
If you see it, grab it. Even if the style
is not your gig, you can probably get a good trade for the disc.
