Warrior--The Code of Life (2001/Nuclear Blast)
Rating--8.6
Retribution--RealAudio
This is a much heavier and nastier release than before, and much of that may be attributable to the addition of Rob Rock to the band. The former
Impellitteri vocalist not only has one of the better voices in metal, but is also a talented and able songwriter. This release also pushes his solo
offering to the limit (and likely surpasses it).
Technical, riff-crunching power metal, reminding a bit of recent Crimson Glory, a little Impellitteri, and the best moments of Warrior's own
back catalog.
Opening track "Day of Reckoning" is strafing and steady, with "Kill the Machine" and "Soul Surviver" being good as well.
A toned-down chug
moves "Standing," "We are One" is fueled by a drum-and-chord rhythm, and "Retribution" is constant rip from the onset.
Slower paces are featured in both "Open
Your Eyes" and "The Endless Beginning," but meaty chords bolster them nicely.
