Velvet Revolver - Contraband (2004/Prosthetic)
Rating - 7.0

One of the biggest "supergroups" to form in quite some time, Velvet Revolver features Scott Weiland from STP, and the majority of Guns n’ Roses’ rhythm section -- including guitarist Slash. The metal and rock world has been clamoring for another album like ‘Appetite For Destruction’ since the late ‘80s-- but they’re gonna have to keep waiting, unfortunately. There is definitely some energy amongst some of the songs here, and yes, the lead single "Slither" is undoubtedly a nasty, biting, and swagger-laden cut... but to call this union "the next GNR," or "the best thing to happen to rock n’ roll in the past 10 years" (as many mainstream "critics" have tried to do), is simply absurd.
When further taking into account the occasional punk tendencies Weiland uses with his vocals, to compare this to ‘Appetite’ -- or even one of the ‘Illusion’ discs -- is laughable. Some decent tracks are here, but let’s not get carried away.
Opener "Sucker Train Blues" has some edged verses, and both "Illegal i Song" and "Dirty Little Thing" follow suit. "Fall to Pieces" has a melodic-flowing chorus, and "Headspace" is in the classic STP vein. "Big Machine" and "Set Me Free" are both decent offerings, while "Superhuman" shows a little more of the raunch and attitude that we want.
