Steve Vai--Passion and Warfare (1990)
Rating--5.5

Still weirdo stuff from Vai, as he seems unable to consistently rock out (instrumentally) the way that Satriani often does. In essence, Vai may never be as large as the image he created at the end of the movie "Crossroads"--that of a swaggering, kill-all guitar god. And it's damn dissapointing, as those 20 minutes of film made me pick up the guitar and push myself, way back when. Anyway...
Hard to stay focused throughout this release, as there just isn't enough sustained rock and groove. "Erotic Nightmares" has some nice distortion chugs intermixed, "The Audience is Listening" rips along nicely with solid metal licks, and "For the Love of God" has some emotional toolings.
Despite the shortcomings, many find the release quite fulfilling; it is definitely one of the discs that will please some more than others.
