Souls of Black--RealAudio
The band has cemented its style by this point, but the consistency in songwriting is still a bit lacking. However, more avenues are explored on this album which will expand the horizons of future releases. The music continues to be fast and furious, with Alex Skolnick's guitar work giving it a high-pitched sound rather than a deep, menacing one. Chuck Billy also continues to improve as a vocalist, with his distinctive, sharp-edged voice cutting its way through a majority of the tracks.
Highlights include "Face in the Sky," "Absence of Light," "The Legacy," and the tooling bassline of the title song.
HOT CHOPS: Chuck Billy's voice on "The Legacy" really showcases his vocal talent. It's a shame, actually, that he's now gone totally to "the growl". Wasted vocal chords...
