Trouble--Plastic Green Head (1995)
Rating--9.3
Opium-Eater--RealAudio
Long Shadows Fall--RealAudio
Little new ground is covered here, but who the heck cares?? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
The title track starts you out
with a fast-paced little riff, but the real groove begins soon thereafter. Trouble do, in fact, expand a bit, as their slower, more
atmospheric songs are stronger here than they have been in the past. And, as mentioned in the previous review, they still have
no problem coming up with some of the meanest riffs in all of metal. This is the stuff that will be played in the
lobby of the Metal Hall of Fame, 24-7.
Ok, you've listened to the opening track. Interesting, you think. But what's this on
track #2, "The Eye"? An evil, wing-spreading riff is what it is! One of their best, and is actually rivaled later on the disc. "Opium-Eater"
may be the high-point of the album, though it's so hard to choose. Want more undeniables? "Hear the Earth" is here for you, as is
the pain and punishment of "Another Day", which destroys like a doomsday steamroller. Add "Below Me" and "Long Shadows
Fall" to the list of heavy hitters, and "Requiem" and "Flowers" to the psycho-emotional pieces, though with plenty of crunch for all. This
one is a classic, kiddies.
Note: The booklet lists track #9 as being "Below Me" and track #10 as "Long Shadows", but they
are actually reversed on the CD. Interesting...
HOT CHOPS: When "The Eye" rolls and unfolds at 1:50--just lean back and groove, man! Check out where "Opium-Eater" connects
at 0:16, and then again at 0:34. Illegal!! Eric Wagner's vocals are better now than they were 10 years ago, and he shows it
on this track.
Mega-riff at 0:40 on "Hear the Earth"--you've been warned.
