Tad Morose--Undead (2001/Century Media)
Rating--8.4

Undead--RealAudio
This power metal release is much darker and sinful than the band's earlier works, and firmly breaks the group through into the "oooh, damn!" category. They've not come close to reaching their peak yet, but this is definitely the starting point, and where the tide has turned. Good distortion and sharp & biting vocals (which can also soar) are the strongest points--the band's songwriting has always been decent, but it too has taken a clear step forward. There are flecks of Maiden, Morgana LeFay, Queensryche, and Dio, all being updated and injected with a modern aura.
Each track stands out to some extent, so there's no need to cover them all. "Where the Sun Never Shines" is malicious and tasty, "Undead" has a damn nasty sliding groove, both "Lord on High" and "Corporate Masters" are fast and slashing, and "Another Time Around" is yet another ripping selection.
Excellent metal. The band's next release is anxiously awaited.
