Threshold gets back to some serious metal on
this release, which is vocalist Andrew McDermott’s
fourth studio offering with the band. Tremendously
consistent throughout, every single track is a strong
listen. The songs are still complex and
multi-dimensional, staying true to the roots of
progressive metal, but they all work.
The thick guitar sound and hauntingly good vocal
melodies of "Mission Profile" give it an excellent
flow, "Stop Dead" has a grooving rhythm, and both
"Ground Control" and "Opium" are strong.
"The Art
of Reason" checks in at over 10 minutes long, and its
heavy/light mix has numerous driving parts within.
"Flags and Footprints" is another song with plenty of
distortion, even though it is encased in a lighter
pace. The top highlights are the constant and
thudding "Pressure," and the moving pulse of "Static."
"The Destruction of Words" closes out this excellent
effort from the U.K. merchants.
