Great Voices of Metal
Robert Plant

It was a very tough decision to choose a great voice in metal. I made a list of singers that I feel strongly about; however, after narrowing it down, the last one standing was Robert Plant, of Led Zeppelin of course.

You are probably wondering, "Why Robert Plant?" He might not even be considered metal by some of you but his very unique voice has influenced many bands over the past three decades of hard rock and metal. He combines high pitched tones with clear emotional vocals, accompanied by the amazing instrumentation of Led Zeppelin. At times he mixes odd voice effects (such as on "Whole Lotta Love") and other times reaching divine heights, like the chorus of "What is and What Should Never Be"...

"Catch the wind, see us spin, sail away, leave today, way up high in the sky.
But the wind won't blow, you really shouldn't go, it only goes to show
That you will be mine, by takin' our time."

A similar and possibly stronger spiritual message is conveyed on "Battle of Evermore."
Robert Plant's vocals are a surreal experience for me because of how multi-dimensional they are. I often find myself listening to Led Zeppelin and being taken right into the song, into another world. Much as human emotions, Robert Plant's voice constantly shifts moods, which enable him to vocally express what the soul feels--whether it is sorrow, joy, or a feeling of hope for a better world, for a better place to be.

I am a big fan of singers who can be so emotional about their music, who through their singing want to touch every soul out there. Plant's vocals, along with the strong songwriting of Led Zeppelin, are soul healing for me. They truly have a very powerful effect.
