Symphony X--Twilight in Olympus (1998)
Rating--8.3

Smoke and Mirrors--RealAudio
Power prog, in the vein of Malmsteen, Stratovarius, and heavy-edged Dream Theater. Extremely intricate and layered, as the songs are constantly shifting and pulsing from within, rarely remaining in any sort of set pattern. Excellent muscianship, and the movements are fast and fluid, while hitting with dead-on accuracy as well.
Semi-smooth, soaring vox complete the scene, as a more refined Graham Bonnett is called into vision.
"Smoke and Mirrors" begins the journey with a spendid mix of speed, melodic keyboard work, and guitar chug. "In the Dragon's Den" has a mean opening riff, and a rapid pace. The dark and crunching chorus of "Orion--The Hunter" places it at the top as well.
Time changes and thick choruses wind throughout "Church of the Machine," "Through the Looking Glass," and "The Relic," as Symphony X places themselves near the top of the great-but-underrated-artists guild. Want some irony? They hail from Jersey--but are only available by import. Figures. Much too good to be an American commercial band.
