Stryper--To Hell With the Devil (1986/Hollywood)
Rating--7.7
The Way--RealAudio
To Hell With the Devil--RealAudio
By far the heaviest Stryper disc ever, as the music smacks of Dokken, Ratt,
Leatherwolf, and even Ozzy at times.
Sort of making a names for themselves
with their "holy" image (never quite sure if it was sincerity or just marketing), the band enjoyed a bit of success during the middle
of the decade. Listening to this one, they probably deserved even more than they got. Smooth vocals and nice blending
harmonies, and absolutely razor-ripping notes and riffs.
The title song is one of the best, with a thick chorus and strong, sharp
verses throughout. The heaviest track is probably "The Way", with a razor intro riff and gallop-fast pulse.
A sharp
chord arrangement gives "Free" strength, and more chord thickness powers the heavy "More Than a Man". Both "Calling On
You" and "Rockin' the World" are smooth and good.
Obviously a better buy for the glam or chop-minded fan, but definitely worth
the money. A solid disc.
