Stone Temple Pilots: Core (1992)
Rating--8.1
Sex Type Thing--RealAudio
Shoved into the spotlight with the single "Plush" (as well as heavy rotation on
MTV), STP took over at the forefront of the initial grunge scene. Good riffs and a
pretty much straight ahead rock/metal album, though you can still pick out the "Seattle" characteristics.
Vocals are nice and nasty, the guitars stand up front with choppy riffs, and there's always a moving bass line
rather than just a mimicing of the guitar riffs.
Brothers Robert (bass) and Dean (guitars) DeLeo make a terrific blend of
no-frills rock. By far the band's heaviest and best
effort, as it would soon succumb to an more alternative
flavor. If you're only familiar with STP over the last couple of years, try and wipe those visions away---they really don't
apply here.
Highlights include the definite metal groove of "Sex Type Thing," plus the chunkier "Wicked Garden,"
"Creep," and the heavy and flowing "Crackerman".
