Skid Row--Slave to the Grind (1991)
Rating--9.3
The Threat--RealAudio
Livin' On a Chain Gang--RealAudio
A much heavier release, and the band probably suffered financially because of it, because this was around the time MTV started screwing over the heavy metal world. If you only know Skid Row as a "glam" band, you owe it to yourself to give this album and the following 'Subhuman Race' listens. The band would support this album with touring partner and opening act Pantera, and they ripped it up in fine fashion--the Skids were not shown up.
Strong highlights include "Monkey Business", "The Threat", "Livin' On a Chain Gang", "Riot Act", "Wasted Time", and the title song. Also includes two slower, thematic songs in "Quicksand Jesus" and "In a Darkened Room".
HOT CHOPS--See if you can get your hands on the original release. It contains the song "Get The Fuck Out", which was replaced on later presses by the song "Beggars Day". The latter is good, but "Get the" is a rollicking, romping anthem. GTFO is a heavy, fast-moving, hilarious romp.
"Livin' on a Chain Gang", probably my fave on the disc, is also a heavy, flowing hitter with an energy-packed chorus.
