S.O.D.--Bigger Than the Devil (1999/Nuclear Blast)
Rating--7.1
The Crackhead Song--RealAudio
Over ten years after first surfacing, the entity known as the Stormtroopers of Death remain fairly the same. Still a fair
spackling of nasty grooves, still a good number of brief, pointless meanderings. The distortion and overall direction is a bit
meatier now, as there is more of a heavy-handed crunch.
The title track is good and thick, and some heavy riffage moves
"The Crackhead Song." "Black War" moves from swift and steady to a balanced chug, and "Aren't You Hungry?" features
a patented S.O.D. mid-groove.
"Free Dirty Needles" is fast and tight-packed, and "Make Room, Make Room" is good
as well.
If you like your metal on the lighter side thematically, but still heavy at the core, then S.O.D. might be right up your
alley.
