Slayer--Seasons in the Abyss (1990)
Rating--8.7

Whereas 'South of Heaven' may have had the heaviness in places but not the adequate riffs to hold it up, 'Seasons' comes
through like a sledge hammer. This disc stands as one of the most bruising collections of heavy chops to grace a set of
speakers, as it is non-stop headbanging from start to finish.
The influence here can be seen directly on a number of bands
and albums, but the one that immediately jumps to mind is 'Burnt Offerings' by Iced Earth. IE is much
more technical and creative than Slayer, but the atmospheric-meets-pure power feel is somewhat similar.
Highlights are aplenty... Monstrous riffs seep from "Blood Red," "Expendable Youth," and "Skeletons of Society," while
"Temptation" has an almost Maiden-esqe gallop to it. "Dead Skin Mask" goes from a dark,
mesmerizing intro to a heavy thud, as does the title (and closing) track. A must-have on the heavy side of your collection.
HOT CHOPS: The song "Seasons in the Abyss" has the best buildup on the album. It starts with a guitar-oriented mood-setting
scale, and the drums are worked in slowly. By the time the rhythm has picked up steam, the song absolutely kills. Check out the
stellar high-hat work during the verses!
