Slayer--Diabolus in Musica (1998/American)
Rating--7.4
Death's Head--RealAudio
Slayer's classic note-to-riff sound is still pretty much intact on this release. Still thrashy and heavy, but with strains of distorted
hardcore at times, ala Geezer or maybe Machine Head.
Opening track "Bitter Peace" is in the rapid-fire velocity style of 'Reign in Blood'---but it's probably the only track on the disc
to keep that pace up through-and-through. "Death's Head" has a rolling bulldozer rhythm, and the churn of "Screaming
From the Sky" is a dark and heavy roll.
The head-moving chorus section to "Stain of Mind" is a highlight, and fast riffing
is intermixed in both "In the Name of God" and "Scrum". Both "Overt Enemy" and "Point" are classic Slayer grind.
While
some of the band's fans have shown only lukewarm interest in the release, it remains fairly consistent with the group's overall direction,
as its style has changed little by little throughout its career.
