Joe Satriani--Strange Beautiful Music (2002/CBS)
Rating--7.7

Seven String--RealAudio
A collection of mainly laid-back tunes from Satch. There are still the good melodies, and the excellent muscianship. It's just not as all-out rocking as 15 years ago. Sure, there are the heavy moments, but certainly no Surfing Aliens. If you can accept that transition in Satriani's guitar world, you'll be just fine.
"Mind Storm" is one of the disc's heavier pieces, and "Seven String" is a good and addictive piece.
The fusion-induced "Traveler" is nice, both "Hill Groove" and "Starry Night" have easy feels to them, and "New Last Jam" is spunky and somewhat experimental.
We're also treated to a cover of Santo and Johnny's "Sleep Walk," a great tooling melody from the '50s.
