Joe Satriani--Flying in a Blue Dream (1989/Relativity)
Rating--7.5

Vocals get added to the mix in places, as Joe proves to be a pretty decent singer as well! More diverse and experimental than the previous release, though several of his best tunes hail from this collection.
"Big Bad Moon" is an absolute rip-fest, as it pulses and grooves along, with Satch singing all the while.
Among the instrumentals, "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" is good, as is the slower "The Forgotten (Part Two)," with its good distortion pickup. The latter reminds a bit of 'Sacred Groove'-era George Lynch.
"Ride" again shows off Satch at the vocal helm, and the mystical and futuristic "Into the Light" is a nice piece. The classic, smooth-edged sound we've come to recognize is prominent in "Back to Shalla-Bal".
"Day at the Beach" is a beautiful tapping piece, and while laying off the distortion, gives special attention to detail. Good stuff!
