Sinner--The Nature of Evil (1998/Nuclear Blast)
Rating--8.7
Darksoul--RealAudio
Faith and Conviction--RealAudio
Led by bassist Matt Sinner, who also performs in the supergroup Primal Fear. So, not
surprisingly, this has some of the same qualities as that Ralph Scheepers project. Pretty much straight-ahead power metal, with
thick chords and crunching riffs. Other slight reminders are of Hammerfall and
Grave Digger.
A double-bass attack fuels the fast and rapid approach of "Devil's River," and a similar pace is shown
on "Trust No One". Majestic key work is mixed with power guitar chops on "A Question of Honour," and the slower paced
title song is plodding and evil, like its namesake.
"Darksoul" is the ultimate slow-burn destroyer, as it falls upon you like a
hammer with a churning riff-rhythm. Head-moving chop work in "Faith and Conviction" reminds of Priest,
and "Walk on the Darkside" is another standout.
Add this one to the ever-growing pile of excellent metal discs from '98...
