Shadows Fall - The War Within (2004/Century Media)
Rating - 8.8

The Power of I and I-mp3

Shadows Fall builds on its earlier success with perhaps their most complete offering yet, as there are no fillers to be found. ‘The War Within’ is a blitzkrieg of a release that is very riff oriented, as small details are worked into the standard rhythms with razor-sharp precision. The vocals are again shouty for the most part, with occasional sections of clean worked into the fray.
Opener "The Light That Blinds" is attacking and flowing, with the grinding "Enlightened by the Cold" having a clean-vocal chorus. "Act of Contrition" is equally as strong, and the excellent, sliding rhythm work of "What Drives the Weak" being pleasant to the ears.
Some sawtooth axework marks "The Power of I and I," "Inspiration on Demand" goes from light to very heavy in a hurry, and "Eternity is Within" features a Testament-like rolling mainframe.
Did I forget to mention "Stillness" and "Those Who Cannot Speak"?.... Yeah, they’re pretty good, too.
