Keyboardist Derek Sherinian’s fourth solo
release has many of the same big names in tow, and the
overall delivery actually improves. Fans of shredding
guitar and up-tempo instrumental metal will love this.
Other than one or two purposely lighter tracks, this
effort is heavier and thicker than ‘Black Utopia’ --
without losing any of the intricate playing in the
process.
Zakk Wylde and Steve Lukather return to
add their guitar parts, and joining them are such
names as John Sykes, Steve Stevens, and Allan
Hollandsworth. The deep-rooted and chunky "Day of the
Dead" starts things off right, with some ripping solos
intermixed. "God of War" features an excellent
distortion sound with some fast rhythm riffing, and
"Trojan Horse" has more chunky delights, with a
blistering guitar/keyboard duel.
"El Flamingo
Suave" is a piano/acoustic piece with a definite
Spanish flair, and the semi-smooth pulse of "Alpha
Burst" is nice. Zakk Wylde lends his vocals to "The
River Song," as it has an almost Sabbathy, doomy,
"Wizard" feel.
All in all, a thorough and solid
release.
