Substance D--Addictions (1999/Noise)
Rating--7.9

California--RealAudio
Heavy and churning, with a thrashy Geezer-like feel. Reminds a bit of 'White Noise'-era Anthrax as well, though in a less-contained, more thrashcore sense.
Very energetic, and occasionally distorted, vocals. Plenty of thick and bottom-heavy chops keeps this one interesting, and slight tinges of punk add variety, as well.
A three-man unit, headed up by '80s name Todd Chaisson.
"Everyday" is energetic and good, and "My Life" is smooth and heavy. Heavy rhythms mark both "Burning Time" and "Who Am I," with the latter incorporating some sharp notes.
Some serious thrash grooving makes "California" one of the disc's top highlights, and an angst-ridden, yearning slow chorus moves "Unsaid".
