This is the band’s fifth release, and marked the
end of several eras for the German rockers. It would
be guitarist Ulrich Roth’s final foray with the group,
and this would also be their last album before turning
to the heavier, more commercial-friendly style that
would eventually pave the way for the huge success
they enjoyed in the ‘80s.
Early Scorpions was often
marked by more of a rocking feel and sense than
"metal," per se, as some tracks could be viewed as
heavier versions of Pink Floyd, even. The chunky and
distortion-laden pieces are still present; however;
two of the band’s more underrated tracks hail from
this release, in fact: "Sails of Charon" and "He’s a
Woman, She’s a Man." "Sails of Charon" is an absolute
underground classic, if you will, and is one of heavy music’s more
mesmerizing experiences. "He’s a Woman" has tons of
energy and flash; it’s a shame that the band would
eventually phase those two cuts out of their live
shows.
Other good cuts include "We’ll Burn the
Sky," "I’ve Got to be Free," and the slower "Born to
Touch Your Feelings."
