Scorpions--Lovedrive (1979)

Lovedrive--RealAudio
An album that started to show hints of the metal monster the Scorpions would soon become. One day to be the headmasters of the "arena riff," only a few songs off of this disc display that trait. Singer Klaus Meine's voice is strong and vital, in the same European vein that makes Ozzy's and Ronnie James Dio's distinctive.
Several highlights, including "Loving You Sunday Morning," "Is There Anybody There?," "Holiday," and the title song. Overall, however, the song arrangements seem to lack something in places---whether it be a strong riff, catchy chorus, or back-beat groove. And the only real reason we know something is lacking at this point is because the band brings it all together in the (very near) future.
HOT CHOPS: "Is There Anybody There?" has a unique, almost Caribbean feel to it, which is quite interesting when mixed with a standard metal sound.
The strong ballad "Holiday" would be the mentor for future songs "Still Loving You," "Winds of Change," and others.
