Only a Man--RealAudio Don't Make No Promises...--RealAudio

When describing the Scorpions' sound, it's probably best to place them somewhere between the NWOBHM feel and standard riff-rock of the early '80s America. In other words, the Scorps are able to capture the best of both genres-- they are heavy, but also catchy and melodic at the same time.
While this album was not a huge commercial breakthrough, it was a breakthrough in terms of the band finding its niche. The songs on this disc rock with conviction, finding grooves and staying with them until the end. The Scorps do the most with a bar chord of any band, changing rhythms and tempos to keep things fresh.
All of "Make it Real," "Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)," and "Falling in Love" have great overall riffs. "The Zoo" is a slow, plodding hitter with a great buildup, but the true gem here is "Only a Man". It starts out with just Klaus, and then the guitars come in with a stop-and-go riff that keeps your head moving for the duration of the song.
