David Lee Roth--Eat 'Em and Smile
Rating--6.8
An all-star lineup, as Diamond Dave brings in six-string wiz Steve Vai, former Talas and future
Mr. Big bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Greg Bissonette. Overall probably a bit flashier than Van
Halen, but not as solid through-and-through.
Lead single "Yankee Rose" is classic Dave, with plenty off sass and attitude.
The fast Talas remake of "Shyboy" is a top highlight, as is the chunky and riff-cool "Tobacco Road."
The carefree sound
of some of Dave's acoustic VH material comes out in "I'm Easy" and "That's Life," and both "Elephant Gun" and "Bump and Grind"
provide a few more riffs, but again the song arrangements seem to be lacking a bit on the overall scale.
A decent release,
though like Van Halen, Dave was also at his best when they were together.
