'A Little Aint Enough' is David Lee Roth's third full-length solo album after his
departure from Van Halen. Guitar duties are taken over by a young axe slinger
named Jason Becker, who sadly had to quit DLR's band shortly after the recording
of this album due to Lou Gehrig's Disease. But, before the disease robbed him of
his ability to play guitar, he let it rip on this release and it paid off, making
'A Little Ain't Enough' Dave's best solo LP up to that time. Becker's guitar sound
is thicker and heavier than Vai's, and he can certainly hold his own when it comes
to shredding. Becker really helps to make the album.
Like any Diamond Dave release, this one has some filler tunes, but
they're offset by the killer ones. There's nothing terrible on here to bring it
down very far. "A Lil' Ain't Enough," the feel-good title track, opens the album
and showcases that thicker sound. Despite some discreet keys, it's a fine track.
Other tunes that really benefit from the thicker sound are "Lady Luck," "Baby's on
Fire," and "Last Call," each good hard rockers with enough catchiness to grab your
interest and not let go. "40 Below" has a good melody and quick tempo, both of
which make up for its lack of heaviness. When "Drop in the Bucket" kicks in at the
20-second mark, its great strut and grind will have you moving your head. The
absolute highlight, though, is "It's Showtime!," a fast, "Hot For Teacher"-esque
ditty with great lyrics, virtuoso guitar, and brilliant drums -- love that cymbal
over the guitar solo!
'A Little Ain't Enough' isn't as famous as the Vai albums ('Eat 'Em and Smile' and
'Skyscraper'), but it's a better disc than either of them, and easily Dave's best solo
effort until 1998's DLR Band album.
