Queensryche--The Warning (1984)

Take Hold of the Flame--RealAudio
The only thing that could really get better on this album is the
production. It would be nice to see this disc remastered. Other than that,
a solid effort from start to finish. Tate's voice almost always stays in
the higher octaves, with the only exception being the emotional intro pieces,
such as "No Sanctuary" and "Take Hold Of The Flame"---the latter still being
a live favorite by the band. In fact, that is the only track the band treats
us with from this album, which is a terrible shame.
A heavy album, churning
out riff after riff. Mid-'80s Queensryche was occasionally compared to
some of Maiden's work, and that parallel can be seen a bit here.
The Wilton/DeGarmo fretwork team marks itself deep
within the great pairs of duo guitarists. It's amazing this band would only
get better. Highlights include... well, let's just say out of 9 songs, 7 are
excellent!
HOT CHOPS: "Take Hold Of The Flame" is only surpassed here by hearing it
live. Also check out Tate's range on the title track. Tons of high notes...
