Queensryche--Operation:Mindcrime (1988)

Speak--RealAudio
The Needle Lies--RealAudio
Possibly the ultimate concept album of any type, depending on your musical tastes---and almost assuredly
atop the metal heap. In any case, this is definitely a molten epic. Tells the story of a young man drawn down in society, a priest
and a (former streetwalker) nun, and more...
This one has everything---driving music, great Tate vocals, and an intriguing
story. The music is sharp, heavy, and fast-paced. The songs go from strict rockers such as "Speak" and "Spreading the
Disease" to slower, emotional songs like "The Mission," to driving rhythmic anthems like "I Don't Believe in Love" and "Eyes of
a Stranger". Fast riffing marks "The Needle Lies," and all of "Breaking the Silence," "Revolution Calling," and the title track
pulse along with pure vitality.
The band's songwriting (and playing) peak with this album; even though they still were able to release solid material afterwards,
it never really felt as "complete" as on this disc. The entire offering is a highlight, and belongs in every collection.
HOT CHOPS--The emotion of "The Mission" is oh so strong. Also, the Tate-only vocal section of "Eyes of a
Stranger," near the end-- "Why am I here, and for how long?" Brief, but powerful. Also, it has deeper meaning once the entire concept story of the
album has unfolded...
