Possessed - Seven Churches (1985/Combat)
Rating - 7.0

Widely considered the first Death Metal album to actually see the light of day (Florida's Death formed around the same time as Possessed, but didn't release their debut until a year or two later), 'Seven Churches' ushered in the hurried vocals and semi-frantic drum paces that would become the norm for many DM bands. Possessed hailed from San Francisco, and their musical tendencies can be traced back to extreme Venom in places, mixed in with some of their neighborhood's thrash scene. Though a short-lived group on the whole, they obviously left their influential mark.
"Pentagram" is a fast and shifting song, with "Evil Warriors" following suit. "Holy Hell" has some good riffing, "Twisted Minds" is decent, and with a closing track entitled "Death Metal"... well, there ya go. That should clear up a lot of questions when it comes to the development of a genre.
