Pretty Maids--Jump the Gun (1990/CBS)
Rating--8.3
Lethal Heroes--RealAudio
This disc is also sometimes referred to as 'Lethal Heroes,' as that name appears on the front cover.
Pretty Maids
had a heavy, fairly straight-forward approach at the beginning of its career. It's a hard rock/metal mix here, in the vein of older
Sinner, some Scorpions and heavy Whitesnake, and other such bands. Catchy tracks... They occasionally border
on cheese, but the thick chords help out. The distortion is definitely heavy-- the songwriting will sometimes
give the songs a lighter feel, however.
The vocals are almost exactly like Dee Snider... A bit more energized, perhaps. A splash of keyboards shows up on
a couple of tracks, making this a diverse yet entertaining release.
The driving and rhythmic "Lethal Heroes" starts off the disc and is followed by a number of strong
cuts, including "Don't Settle For Less," "Rock the House," and "Headlines".
"Savage Heart" is a tough semi-ballad, and on "Young Blood" the band sounds like a
metallized version of Foreigner! Heavier moments show up in the forms of "Attention" and "Jump the Gun," while "Partners in Crime" is both bottom-heavy and melodic.
