Paradise Lost--Draconian Times (1995)
Rating--7.0
Enchantment--RealAudio
I normally like doom, but the biggest problem I can see with this release is the fact that it doesn't stay doomy--too many
times it will go from total darkness to an upbeat, hard-rock type flow. Nothing wrong with either; it's just that they don't mix too well.
Coming across a little like Tiamat and Type O Negative, with vocals along the lines of Steele with
some Hetfield belts intermixed. The deeper vocals are the best, though.
Those somber vocals highlight the lead track "Enchantment",
and when paired with the layered dual guitars a great atmosphere is achieved. "Hallowed Land" has a good, crisp guitar sound, and
nice rhythm work during the slow-down section in the middle.
"Once Solem" is bolstered by a heavy riff, and both "Shades
of God" and "Hands of Reason" are slow, choppy, and strong. While not standouts, "The Last Time" and "Forever Failure" both are
above average as well.
