Primal Fear - Devil's Ground (2004/Nuclear Blast)
Rating - 8.5

The uber-consistent Primal Fear returns with their 5th studio offering in the past seven years. This is par for the PF course -- more fast drums, etched riffs, and screaming heavy metal anthems. Many of their songs and riffs would instantly be deemed as "freakin' unreal" should they be released by other power metal bands. However, these have come to be expected as part of the norm from Primal Fear. This in no way is meant to downplay their tenacious songwriting and execution; instead, it is reason to applaud them even more. This release is perhaps a bit smoother and "classic" sounding in places, but plenty of crunch can still be found; a solid offering.
Virtually every track lurches and snarls with electricity. To name a few: "Suicide and Mania" is a steady moving treat, "Sacred Illusion" is fast and ripping, "Wings of Desire" is a mystical churner, and both "Soulchaser" and "Colony 13" are pounding staples. The evil, voice-spoken title track serves as the disc closer, bidding you fairway until Ralf, Mat and the boys return once again...
