Phantom Blue--Built to Perform (1993)
Rating--9.3
Better Off Dead--RealAudio
Loved Ya To Pieces--RealAudio
A 100%, kick-ass offering. When the rock n' roll battle of the sexes is waged, this disc will be spinning in the women's corner.
Non-stop riffs, crisp and polished production, and stylish and energetic lyrics.
There are AC/DC-grooving
neck-breakers, Dokken and Megadeth-influenced chops, and
Tesla-solid chunks throughout. Enjoy the bliss while you can, because they have yet to match it...
Virtually every song is a highlight... "Time to Run" is a smooth power groove, as the production is at its peak. This was actually
the first song I ever heard from the group, and it still holds a special place in my metal heart....
"Better Off Dead" and "Love
Ya to Pieces" are powerhouses--check out the riff at 2:00 of the latter! "Little Man", "So Easy", "Lied to Me", and "A Little Evil"
all stand out as well, and the band gives a strong, adrenalized cover of Thin Lizzy's "Bad Reputation"--great drumming, as the overlooked
gem is finally given its due.
A landmark album in metal because of the "female" factor, but don't look at it like that--this one
rips any way you cut it. Highly recommended.
