Pantera's second "hair metal" release, and still two albums away from Phil Anselmo's band debut. The vocalist here is Terry Glaze, who sounds a good deal like an
early, gritty Joe Elliot. In fact, a good deal of the music in general reminds of 'High n' Dry' era Def Lep. There's also maybe some edged Crue circa '83 or '84, as well.
This is a totally different band and sound from what the metal world associates with Pantera, and this early-career span of releases is actually a good example
of a band not making it big--because if they had, we may have never gotten to hear 'Vulgar Display', 'Cowboys From Hell', and the like. Regardless of that, though, there
is still a bit of charm here. If you take the release at face value for what it is -- a mid-80's hair metal album -- it's actually not all that bad a collection of tunes. It's just not
Pantera, is all.
Opening track "All Over Tonight" is good, and the steady "Like Fire" follows suit. "Heavy Metal Rules" is thick and anthem-like, and other decent showings include "Only
a Heartbeat Away," the screaming instrumental "Blue Light Turnin' Red," and the title track.
