Overkill--From the Underground and Below (1997)
Rating--9.0

It Lives--RealAudio I'm Alright--RealAudio

Combine the speed of 'W.F.O.' and the killer riffs and rhythms of 'I Hear Black,' and you come up with this masterpiece opus. Solid, solid work, right from the open-handed crunch of the first tune. Overkill, in my opinion, has made an even better comeback here in '97 than fellow metalers Flotsam and Jetsam did with its release 'High'. This one just smokes, kiddies.
The guitar work is extremely tight, and while there appear to be fewer solos than in the past, the riffs are stronger than ever. Excellent headbanging fare. A must for all thrash and power metal fans, as this one helped to make '97 a major year in the return of metal.
Highlights include "It Lives," "Save Me," "Long Time Dyin'," "Genocya," the 'Killing Kind'-meets-'I Hear Black' "Half Past Dead," mosher "The Rip N' Tear," and "I'm Alright".
HOT CHOPS: The rhythms and time changes in "It Lives" and "I'm Alright" are classic-groove Overkill. Also, when the drums roll in on "Save Me"....Ooooh. Niiiiice.
