Yngwie Malmsteen--Trilogy (1986)

You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget--RealAudio
Despite the bad press Malmsteen may have gotten in the past for being a "showboat" and self-centered musician, this is one
release where the songs truly stand on their own---and Yngwie compliments them, rather than dominating. The revolving vocalist
door gives us Mark Beals for this effort, and he's a golden-throated, melodic belter. Very admirable work, and fits perfectly with the
Gothic-style scenes painted by Yngwie. Excellent keyboard use on the disc as well, though it doesn't hamper the metal any.
Lead track and single "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget" has an excellent guitar chug and keyboard mix, and is good
throughout. "Liar" is strong and fast, with great lead runs intermixed with the verses.
"Queen in Love" features strong power
chords, which lend a dominate backbone to the song, and "Fury" has a swift pace thanks to a solid drum beat.
"Magic Mirror"
shows off some impressive time stops, and "Dark Ages" is a slower metal piece, but is chunky and just that-- dark.
There
are two instrumentals on the disc, and both are lessons in classical/metal fushion. "Crying" is a nice, emotional acoustic piece at
the beginning, with light orchestration. Towards the end it goes electric, but is able to sustain the same heartstring-tugging tone.
"Trilogy Suite OP:5" closes the album out, and is just all-around impressive. Both axe speed and clarity are displayed---the
dude can just flat-out play...
