Yngwie Malmsteen--Fire and Ice (1992/Elektra)
Rating--7.0
Forever is a Long Time--RealAudio
Not entirely heavy through and through, but this is a disc that gets better (and more respect) with each listen. I'm also
getting to the stage of my metal-listening endeaver where Malmsteen in general impresses... And yes, I play guitar, and know
the difference between fluff and talent!
The vocal
revolving door continues, with Goran Edman at the helm this time around. He fits the usual bill--crystal clear melodies, with pristine
range.
Good lead work oozes throughout the title track, with splendid vocal harmonies as well. A number of genre-shifters are
featured, as the fast-paced "Forever is a Long Time" is very Stratovarious-like, and "All I Want is
Everything" has a cool Badlands, bluesy feel.
Several other upper cuts: "Final Curtain,"
"Dragonfly," and "Teaser".
