Nightwish--Century Child (2002/Century Media)
Rating--8.6
Slaying the Dreamer--RealAudio
A heavy and solid release. The band's great distortion sounds mix magnificantly with the female vocals, and the occasional background orchestrational
movements add substance to the fray as well.
Tasty riff sections are sprinkled
throughout "Bless the Child," and "Slaying the Dreamer" is nasty throughout.
Strong tracks include "Dead to the World," "Ever Dream," "Ocean Soul," and "Feel
for You," while "Forever Yours" is a calm, beautifully-sung piece that has a great flute accompaniment. The male/female tradeoff vocals in
"The Phantom of the Opera" (ala Iced Earth's own interpretation of the story) make it a good cut near disc's end.
Nightwish remains top-notch metal songwriters, and
a vastly underrated group. If you don't own one of their releases, it's time to break down and expand your collection.
