Nightwish--Angels Fall First (1997/Century Media)
Rating--7.0
Elvenpath--RealAudio
The debut offering from this symphonic/power metal unit, where female semi-operatic vocals are the focal point. Stratovarius and others from the genre are
occasionally brought to mind; the band is still trying to get a firm footing here in terms of its sound and songwriting, and will improve in the very near future. Male vocals
are added in places, but do not work well (as the guy simply can't sing), and will be omitted from the bulk of the band's upcoming offerings.
Several good
tracks show up here, including "Elvenpath," "Beauty and the Beast," "Tutankhamen," and "Know Why the Nightingale Sings". In all this is a decent showing, but ultimately
serves as a primer for the next disc.
