Nevermore--Dreaming Neon Black (1999/Century Media)
Rating--9.0
Deconstruction--RealAudio
The Death of Passion--RealAudio
A splendid metal release, as Nevermore fully hits its stride with this one. A tasty mix of the first album's thickness and solidity, and 'The Politics of Ecstasy's' thrash
and vitality.
Recent Testament is brought to mind at times, as musically things groove along in a riff-induced manner. Vocalist Warrel Dane
continues to enchant with his broken-glass, sweet-and-sorrow voice.
The solid "Ophidian" opens the disc, and a power-slide chorus stands out in "Beyond Within".
Great double-bass fueling romps throughout the strong "Death of Passion," while "I Am the Dog" is tight and flowing. "Fault of Flesh" is rapid and note-bending, and
more rolling action is featured in "Poison Godmachine" and "No More Will".
A slow buildup in "Deconstruction" eventually gives way to a chugging, evil-drenched
rhythm set, as the band stalks in fine fashion.
The title track emerges as one of Nevermore's top catalog spots. Acoustic-based at its onset, it eventually melts into
a deep, thick chorus frame, with hallowed Dane vocals. A tremendous piece, and a great overall metal disc.
