Mercury Rising--Building Rome (1998/Dominion)
Rating--7.1
Think--RealAudio
A more progressive feel this time around, in terms of the pace shifts and overall songwriting. Still distorted and heavy
in places, but not quite as driving as the debut. A comparable feel to Dream Theater's
'Images and Words'.
"Think" is a solid track, and a chunky kick-in builds up "A Narrow Door." Heavy sections highlight
the title track, and "Of Lesser Men" is above par as well.
Again, more towards the streamlined proggy, tooling feel than what
has come to be described as "power/prog". Many fans like the 'Images and Words' style of prog better, but just be aware of the
band's slight change in style before expecting 'Upon Deaf Ears,' Part Two.
Amid all of this, the musicianship is still quite commendable.
