Mystic Prophecy - Regressus (2003/Nuclear Blast)
Rating - 9.0

Mystic Prophecy is a mini-supergroup of sorts, boasting vocalist R.D. Liapakis and bassist Martin Albrecht from Valley's Eve, guitarist Gus G. from Dream Evil and Firewind, and drummer Dennis Ekdahl from Sins of Omission. The result is a truly heavy, ripping, and cutting-edge power metal offering. The closest comparisons are Valley's Eve, Brainstorm, and Dream Evil, yet Mystic Prophecy is much heavier than any of them. There are no progressive undertones; there is some of the speed-like tendencies of earlier Stratovarius and Blind Guardian, but again--none of the prog/experimental elements. This is simply in-your-face, riff-and-rhythm heavy music, all the while avoiding simplicity by mixing in much more than simple bar chords.
Virtually every track is worthy of your time, as the words "damn heavy" can be applied to "Eternal Flame," "Sign of the Cross," "Night of the Storm," "Forgotten Soul," and "In Your Sins."
"Mystic Prophecy" is a driving force, "Calling From Hell" features a mid-song chunk, the title song has some fast galloping, and "The Land of the Dead" is another high point. Some true-to-the-originals bonus covers are tacked onto the end, just for good measure: Manowar's "Fighting the World" and Maiden's "Sanctuary."
If you like your power metal in the heavy-handed European mold, you'll eat this stuff up.
