Mercyful Fate--Dead Again (1998/Metal Blade)
Rating--7.5
Crossroads--RealAudio
The King is as good as ever, as Fate continues to rip some 15 years after its first metal endeaver.
"The Night" has one
of the band's patented drive-and-groove combos, and soaring, spine-tingling KD screams complete the set. The staccato-riff drive
of "Crossroads" is a highlight, as are the chops in "Sucking Your Blood," which trade off nicely with the grinding verses.
The nice mood-setting, non-standard pieces are here as well: the creepy little verse prowl of "The Lady Who Cries," and the winding
and sinewy "Fear".
"Since Forever" also stands out, as the band delivers yet again in its no-nonsense fashion. Plenty of
flash and theme, of course, but no BS when it comes to the music.
