Blitzkrieg--RealAudio
A nice idea by Metallica, as this compiles all of those rare (and sometimes hard to find on CD) B-sides and outtakes. The newer
slew of cover songs are OK; the best of the bunch are by bands that have made a living ripping people's faces off. The true
highlights are on the second disc, from the band's earlier, thrashier days.
Disc One has some strong moments in "It's Electric"
and "Sabbra Cadabra," both of which feature some surprisingly strong and soaring vocal work by Hetfield. The heavy pick-up
sections of "Astronomy" are good, and the "Mercyful Fate" selections just plain kill-- but then again, that's in large part due to
Fate itself.
Disc Two is the memory trip for many of us. The first five songs are the tracks from
1987's 'Garage Days' disc. Two sought-after CD tracks pop up in the form of "Am I Evil?" and
"Blitzkrieg," which appeared as bonus tracks on the earliest versions of 'Kill 'Em All'. Pure classics.
Of the B-side selections,
"Breadfan" is the best, as it is simple rip and shred. "The Prince" is heavy as well. Of the newer Motorhead tunes, the raw
and heavy "Damage Case" stands the highest.
Again, in all, a nice little collection. It's good to hear the older, thrashier tunes.
Here's hoping some more of that speed is injected into the band's arsenal in the near future.
HOT CHOPS: Listen to the sound clip, kiddies. Metallica con cahunas.
