Megadeth - United Abominations (2007/Roadrunner)
Rating - 8.8

'United Abominations' is politically charged heavy metal that screams with attitude and energy, and Megadeth hasn’t sounded this refreshed and rejuvenated since 1992's 'Countdown to Extinction'. While Dave Mustaine has very strong opinions when it comes to politics and current affairs, if you are a fan of heavy metal you will find something to like on this album (whether you agree with his views or not).
This is the offering that Megadeth fans have been waiting for since 'Cryptic Writings'; nothing here sounds rehashed or stale. The axework here is top notch, and Mustaine still knows how to write those killer riffs that he’s become renowned for. There are plenty of blistering solos and guitar harmonies throughout, and the overall sound of the album is more thrashy and riff-oriented than the previous few releases.
Highlights include the fantastic "Washington Is Next" which is an energetic, flowing-rocker and contains some of the best guitar work on the album. "Blessed Are The Dead" contains some great riffs and a catchy chorus. "Amerikhastan" is an attitude-laden riff fest with great lead breaks and guitar harmonies throughout, and "Sleepwalker" rocks hard with its machine-gun riffing. Somewhat disappointing is the inclusion of a reworked version of "A Tout Le Monde" featuring Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. Not that it sounds bad, but it feels somewhat out of place with the overall flow of the disc. Other notable highlights are "Never Walk Alone - A Call To Arms," "Gears Of War," and the title track.
'United Abominations' is Megadeth’s 11th studio album, coming on a new label with a brand new set of players. Mustaine is now the only long time member remaining after the departure of bassist Dave Ellefson. This time around he has hired brothers and Eidolon alums Glen and Shawn Drover to play guitar and drums, respectively, and both are extremely capable musicians. On bass duties is veteran rocker James Lomenzo who has played in various bands ranging from White Lion to Black Label Society. Despite the lineup changes, this one is still pure Megadeth!
