Megadeth - Risk (1999/Capitol)
Rating - 5.5

The irony-laden title of this disc proved to be a harbinger, as the new sound Megadeth tried on this release was a risk better untaken. There are many elements present here that are new and different for the band, and not in a good sense. Only a select few are "metal" in the way that the band had been known for much of the '90s; in other places there are industrial feelings, muted distortion, and general experimental-sounding music. Not very heavy... not very Megadeth.
Opener "Insomnia" ends up being decent once you've heard all the other songs, and boasts some of that aforementioned industrialism. "Prince of Darkness" is an "Am I Evil" homage and "Ecstasy" is decent, and while a song like "Breadline" has a smooth and pretty good chorus, the song as a whole is a lighter approach that you would ever associate with Mustaine.
Overall this is just a very strange experience. One can hypothesize that the band was wanting to go in a more commercial direction... but in essence their music had already done that earlier in the decade, to an extent. In any case, they will semi-rebound in the near future.
