Mars--Metaldrone (1998/Spyr)
Rating--7.5
Knifemare--RealAudio
This is the CD re-release of an album originally recorded back in 1986. Dokken style rock metal
for the most part, though it's not until the end tracks that they really begin to rip. The first five to six lack some of the distorted punch;
the last three definitely do not!
Of the "good" variety include "Obsession," "Damnation," and "Ash Tuesday," with the title track being faster and strong. Smooth
vocals abound, and the bonus tracks at the tail end of the disc seem to put everything together for the band. A ripping version
of "Speed King" is tasty, and "Knifemare" is a swift and heavy treat. "Beast in the Sky" closes things out in nice fashion, making
one wonder what these guys supposedly lacked back in '86 that so many others had. A nice little ride---it would be good to see
all the songs have the updated guitar sound/mixing of the final three.
