Led Zeppelin--Led Zeppelin (1969/Atlantic)
Rating--7.7
Whether you've grown tired by now of hearing the band on classic rock stations or not, Led Zeppelin's influence and groundbreaking
legacy for the heavy rock community is undeniable. Add in the fact that the unit could write great songs and flat-out groove, and homage must be paid...
This debut is very bluesy overall; almost Stonesy (Rolling, that is) is places. The shake and grind will arrive shortly, though.
A number of
recognizable tracks here, including the chunky "Communication Breakdown," the slow and methodical blues of "You Shook Me,"
and the winding and steady rhythm held within "How Many More Times."
"Good Times Bad Times" is solid, and the
building "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" leaves its mark as well.
One could probably argue that Led Zeppelin was the teeny
bopper-less Beatles, as it very well could have done as much for the impending arena music scene as the Beatles did
for Bandstand and such.
