When Darkness Calls--RealAudio

With Robert Mason back on the vocals, George and the boys locked themselves away in a studio and proceeded to re-write and re-record a number of Lynch Mob and Dokken staples. The result? A heavier, darker, and more wickedly-evil sound to each and every track. Several songs are just a bit thicker, while others have almost been totally reworked from top to bottom. Any way you cut it, though, this is a fine slab of metal, and a must for the Dokken/Mob fans whose tastes have turned to the dark side over the past few years.
"Tangled in the Web" is the first track that really catches your attention as being a "stand out", as the horn sections have been removed, and replaced by a crawling, pulsing backbone. "Breaking the Chains" has a churning feel to both the vocals and the music, while all of "River of Love," "Wicked Sensation," and "Paris is Burning" are good.
"When Darkness Calls" gets the vote for "most improved", as its hallowed chorus pulse is haunting. Both "All I Want" and "She's Evil but She's Mine" had a murky atmosphere in their original forms, so their inclusion was somewhat expected. Sandwiched in the middle of everything is the track "Relax," a reworking of the song "Relaxin' in the Land of Az" off the much-maligned 'Smoke This' release. However, it turns into a definite high spot here, with Mason's soaring and emotional vocals leading the way. The album is closed out with the thudding and satisfying rhythm of "The Secret".
